Mounting of Lenses for Rimless Glasses
Mounting of Lenses for Rimless Glasses
It is a common knowledge that there are generally three different kinds of prescription glasses – full rimmed, semi rimmed and rimless. Full rimmed glasses have their lenses supported by a rim which also offers protection to the lenses. Smart designer brands use this added frame to create unorthodox appeals, but it must be also noted that the rim finally increases the weight of the glasses. Semi Rimless Frames offer you the advantages of both full rimmed and rimless, obviously at a lesser degree than the usual.

Rimless glasses, as the name suggests, have no rim around their lenses at all. These rimless glasses are generally comprised of two templates and a nose part. As the lenses of the rimless glasses are more visible than the other two, it becomes pivotal to choose the lenses widely. While constructing the lenses of the rimless glasses, only polycarbonate, Trivex or high index materials are used as these lenses offer a much more durable option. Lenses made of regular acetate have become a strict no-no for rimless glasses, as they tend to crack easily. Also, one must remember that rimless glasses can be converted into regular sunglasses and prescription sunglasses.

Mounting lenses into rimless eyeglass frames is tricky and requires a skilled and experienced technician. Each lens must be drilled perfectly so that the frame fits snugly into the lens. Poorly mounted rimless eyeglass frames may begin to rattle, and eventually crack the lens.

Rimless glasses also differ in the manner of construction of the frame and how it is attached to the lenses. One of the ways of mounting the lenses is to use double drilled frames as they have the least chance to begin rattling or to loosen. This kind of double drilled mounting is a technically difficult thing to achieve, so always ensure that the person who is actually doing the mounting is a professional and has a lot of experience in this matter. But the most followed method of mounting of the lenses of the rimless glasses is to have a notched construction which is easier for the optical professional to make. Though it is easier and less time consuming, notched construction has more likelihood to become loose with increasing usage.
